Monument to the Burned Villages in WWII, Leningrad Region, 1985

The monument has become notable among young people for its advanced design for the mid-1980s in general, and completely unusual for Soviet memorial architecture. It receives a lot of feedback on social networks.

"One of the strongest Russian memorials, in my opinion, is the “Ghost Village” by Khidekel and Romanov, created in 1985 near Kirovsk, Leningrad Region. It is strong in its simplicity. The concrete outlines of village huts commemorate the burned villages.

Petersburg nature enhances the impact of the memorial. In autumn, winter, or on cloudy days, gray concrete beams barely show through against the leaden sky and seem like a mirage, a ghost. Are you driving down the highway and don't realize what's in front of you? Didn't you dream? And now these skeletons of houses emerge from the fog and just as quickly disappear."

Один из самых сильных российских мемориалов, на мой взгляд – «Призрачная деревня» Хидекеля и Романова, созданный в 1985 году недалеко от Кировска Ленинградской области. Он силен своей простотой. Бетонные абрисы деревенских изб отмечают память о сожженных деревнях.

Петербургская природа усиливает воздействие мемориала. Осенью, зимой или в пасмурные дни серые бетонные балки едва проступают на фоне свинцового неба и кажутся миражом, призраком. Едешь по шоссе и не понимаешь, что это там перед тобой? Не привиделось ли? И вот из тумана выплывают эти скелеты домов и так же быстро исчезают.
